Bursting with vivid colors, big skies, shifting light and swirling, the paintings of Jami Tobey are uniquely satisfying and truly original.
The daughter of acclaimed Santa Fe sculptor Gene Tobey, Jami has quickly emerged as her own force in the art world, producing radiant impressionistic paintings that are featured in a growing number of galleries across the United States, and commissioned for exclusive private residences, non-profit organizations, fundraising efforts and auctions. Jami was Southwest Art Magazine’s Artist to Watch in 2006.
The Southern California painter is perhaps best known for her intricate landscapes and tree paintings, where colors speak --- and sometimes shout --- with the emotion and energy of the subject. Using layers of acrylics and metallic ink, Jami’s smooth rhythms of color create a poetic balance as fields of color awaken and glow like stained glass. Her work reveals a mastery of form, combined with a love for the natural world --- both its breathtaking majesty and its seeming banalities.
Growing up in an artistic household in New Mexico, Jami worked alongside her father in his studio where she was exposed to a spectrum of subjects, styles and techniques. She cites her father as her best teacher, her motivator and the foundation of her artistic endeavors.
Motherhood has brought more focus to Jami’s work in ways both predictable and unexpected. When her oldest child, Tobey, was diagnosed with autism at age two, Jami quit her teaching job to care for him. She then found the time to paint while Tobey was in school and again at night, transforming her art into a creative outlet and fulfilling her dream as an artist.
